Cheadle was born in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Bettye (née North), and Donald Frank Cheadle, Sr.. After graduating at East High School in Denver, Colorado in 1982, Cheadle attended and graduated from the California Institute of the Arts with a Bachelor¹s Degree in Fine Arts.
